JOHN PROCTOR
John Proctor was an early, outspoken critic of the witch-hunt. When his servant, Mary Warren, claimed to be bewitched, Proctor offered to cure her with a whippinga remedy he suggested for the afflicted girls. Not surprisingly, Proctor was accused of witchcraft and convicted despite a petition signed by 31 character witnesses. He urged prominent Bostonians to intervene in the witchcraft hysteria, but his appeals failed. Proctor was hanged on August 19, 1692.
