SHiNE (Seeking Harmony in Neighborhoods Everyday) will be facilitating an interactive workshop with 25-50 (maximum) high school students in conjunction with matinee performances of The Crucible entitled, The Power of the Individual:  How Do You SHiNE?.  This intimate workshop will explore ways that students either use or relegate their own power to that of the group, and how those that are outsiders are labeled and treated.  Very often in adolescence, conformity rules, leaving those who dont conform to be subjects of bullying and harassment.  This workshop will help students to recognize the negative results that can occur when one pushes aside their individuality and personal beliefs in order to fit in with the more popular group, and to recognize the relevance of the lessons taught in The Crucible to their own lives.

Location:  The Virginia Theatre (where The Crucible performances are being held)

I.        ï¿½Whats The Norm Game (10 minutes):  Facilitator will divide students up based on a norm (ex.- everyone wearing sneakers stand to my right; everyone wearing a black article of clothing stand to my right; everyone with a sibling, stand to my right, etc.).

II.       Discussion (15 minutes):

  • How did it feel to be a part of the more popular group (the norm)?  How did it feel to be outside of this popular group?

  • Is being different something that is celebrated in your school or does conformity rule?  Why?  What happens to people who are different?  How are they viewed?  Labeled?  Treated?

  • Have you ever been in a situation where you have had a different opinion or view from others?  Were you comfortable enough to express that view, even though others might not have agreed with you?  What happened?  How did it feel to have a differing opinion from the larger group?

  • Can one person make a difference/impact by taking a stand even though it goes against the group?  How?  Can you think of examples?

  • How does this conversation and the game we played relate to the Crucible?  Could one person have made a difference in the story of the Crucible?  Who?  How?

  • What are ways that you can make a difference in your school/community?

III.      Wrap Up (5 minutes):  Talk about themes in The Crucible and the ways that students can get involved with SHiNE to take a stand and make a difference on issues that are important to them.  (NOTE:  Wrap Up tailored to whether or not students have read play prior to attending show).

TO RSVP:

Please contact Meridith Berger at [email protected], or 646.613.5101 or fax 646.613.5151.  Workshop size is limited to 50 students, and is on a first come first serve basis.
